BMW R35
1937. In [year], BMW began production of the BMW R35, a comfortable mid-range road motorcycle featuring a popular pressed-steel frame, a single-cylinder overhead-valve engine, and a traditional cardan shaft drive. After World War II, the assembly line for this motorcycle was moved to Eisenach, which was occupied by the Red Army —the former BMW factory—where the Soviet joint-stock company “Awtovelo” resumed mass production of the BMW R35 in 1945. In the early 1950s, the motorcycle was modernized—the front fork was replaced, a candle-shaped rear shock absorber was installed, and the transmission was modified to operate solely with a foot pedal. In 1951, the “Awtovelo” company was liquidated and transferred to the GDR. The company’s emblem was also changed—the blue areas were painted red. These motorcycles were primarily intended for the USSR and other socialist countries. Between 1945 and 1956, a total of approximately 83,000 BMW R35 motorcycles were produced.
